Rack anchoring, floor load capacity and spotting a barbell alone are genuine injury and property risks. Follow the manufacturer's published load rating and installation instructions, and verify anything you bolt into a floor or a wall against the actual structure, with a licensed structural engineer or contractor if you are not certain.

We do not test equipment in person

Our guidance comes from published manufacturer specifications, stated load ratings, retailer specification tables and verified owner reviews. We do not run a test facility, we do not conduct destructive testing, and we will never write that we tested something we did not. Where published figures disagree with each other, we say so rather than picking the flattering one.

Structural and anchoring limits

A power rack anchored to a concrete slab, a folding rack lagged into a wall, and several hundred pounds of iron on a suspended wood floor are all structural questions. We publish the standard practice and the arithmetic behind it, but we cannot see your slab, your framing, your joist spans or your span direction, and none of those can be assessed from a photograph or an email.

Specifically, and without limitation:

  • We cannot tell you that your floor will carry a given load. Residential floors are designed to code minimums that vary by room, age and jurisdiction, and point loads behave differently from distributed ones.
  • We cannot tell you that your wall will hold a folding rack. That depends on framing material, member size, spacing, fastener selection and what is behind the drywall.
  • We cannot tell you that your slab is safe to drill. Slab thickness varies, and radiant floor heating tubing and post-tension cables can both be hidden inside one. Drilling into either is dangerous and expensive.

In every one of those cases, the correct answer is a licensed structural engineer or a qualified contractor who can inspect the actual structure. Our anchoring guide exists to tell you what questions to ask, not to replace that person.

Training, spotting and injury

Lifting alone at home removes the spotter that a commercial gym provides by default. Any loaded barbell movement performed alone should be done inside a full cage with the safeties set, or on a rack fitted with spotter arms set at the correct height, and you should know how to bail out of a failed rep before you attempt one. A true one-rep max attempt alone, without safeties, is a bad idea no matter how strong you are.

Our one-rep max tools and percentage charts are estimates from published formulas, they drift badly at high rep counts, and they are not a training program. Consult a qualified coach for programming and a physician before beginning any exercise regimen, particularly if you have an existing injury or medical condition.

Combustion, electrical and climate equipment

Garage heating touches two regulated trades. Any 240 volt hardwired appliance requires an electrician and adequate panel capacity, and any gas-fired unit heater requires correct gas piping, venting, combustion air, clearance to combustibles and usually a permit and inspection. Carbon monoxide from an improperly vented appliance is lethal. Do not treat our climate control guide as installation instructions.

Accuracy of specifications and prices

Manufacturers revise products without renaming them, and published specifications carry manufacturing tolerances. Confirm the exact figures against the documentation for the specific unit you are buying. Where we cannot confirm a figure, we omit it rather than guess. Prices change constantly and should always be confirmed on the retailer's own page.
