Most home gyms get built in a single weekend, from a decision made the week before. These guides exist so that decision is made against real measurements: what the room allows, what the floor can take, and what has to go in before anything else does.

Basement or garage? They are not the same build
Almost every home gym article online treats "home gym" as one thing. It is not. A basement and a garage fail in completely different ways, and the guide that helps one will quietly ruin the other.
A basement is a ceiling height problem, a floor loading problem and a noise problem. The ceiling is usually the lowest in the house and the real limit is a duct run or a beam rather than the drywall. A garage is a climate problem and a space-sharing problem. The slab removes the floor loading question entirely and lets you anchor almost anywhere, which is a large advantage.
