How to use these charts
Three numbers decide whether a piece of equipment works in your room, and all three are on this page somewhere. The first is clear height to the lowest obstruction, which is a duct, a beam, a sprinkler head or a light fixture far more often than it is the ceiling itself. The second is clear width, which a barbell sets rather than a rack: a men's Olympic bar is 86.6 in long, so any barbell lift wants at least 9 ft of clear width. The third is hole spacing and tube size, which decides whether an attachment you want will physically bolt to the rack you own.
Two cautions on published figures. Manufacturers do not all measure the same way: rack heights sometimes include a pull-up bar and sometimes do not, and plate thickness varies between a competition bumper and an economy one made to the same weight. And a rated capacity is a manufacturer's published figure under their own test conditions, not a safety margin you should plan to spend. Where a figure genuinely varies, these charts give a range instead of a false precision.
