A 20 kg barbell is 86.6 inches long, so any room you lift with a barbell in needs at least 9 feet of clear width, and 10 feet to load plates comfortably. A full power rack with a proper walk-around wants roughly an 8 by 8 foot zone, which fits into a room of about 10 by 12 feet.

Layout is where a home gym is won or lost, and it is decided by a handful of dimensions rather than by square footage. The one that governs everything is the bar: a barbell is 86.6 inches long and it does not fold. Every other decision, where the rack goes, which wall the plates live on, whether the car still fits, is downstream of finding nine clear feet for that bar to sit in.

Clear width is the unobstructed dimension between the two nearest permanent obstacles at barbell height, which is not the same as the room's wall to wall measurement. Stud walls, a water heater, a stair stringer and a support post all reduce it, and it is the number to measure before you buy anything.

Which clearances are genuinely non-negotiable?

Four of them. Everything else is preference.

  • Nine feet of clear width for any barbell lift. The bar is 86.6 inches, which is 7 feet 2.6 inches, and you need roughly a foot at each end to slide plates onto the sleeves without turning sideways or scraping a wall. Ten feet is where it stops being annoying.
  • Loading room at both sleeve ends. A 45 pound plate is 17.7 inches across and you load it with two hands from beside the bar. If one end of the rack sits eight inches from a wall, you will be loading that side one plate at a time at an angle for the life of the gym.
  • A walk-around on at least two sides of the rack. You need to get to the J-hook pins, the safety pins and both sleeves. Two sides is the minimum, three is comfortable, and a rack in a corner with two walls is a rack you will end up moving.
  • Three to four feet of clear bar path in front of the rack. This is where you step back after unracking, where a failed squat gets bailed, and where rack pulls and landmine pressing travel. It also has to be clear at floor level, so it cannot be where the bench lives between sets.

How should you zone the room?

Stop thinking about where each item goes and think about four zones instead. The zones have different clearance needs and different noise, and separating them is what stops a small room from feeling like storage.

  • The lift zone is the rack, the bar and the bench, and it claims the largest clear rectangle in the room with the longest dimension running the way the bar runs. It gets the best flooring, the best light and the walk-around.
  • The accessory zone is dumbbells, bands, a landmine and floor space to do lunges and carries. It can be narrower and it can overlap with the lift zone as long as it is empty during a set.
  • The storage wall holds plates, bars and small equipment vertically. This is the zone people skip and it is the one that gives the most floor back.
  • The cardio corner takes the machine with the longest footprint and the least need to move around. Put it where its long axis runs along a wall and where the noise path matters least.

Where do the mirrors, plates, lights and outlets actually go?

Mirrors go on the wall you face, which for most people means the wall in front of the rack rather than behind it. Behind the rack, the uprights break up the reflection and you see nothing useful. Mount them high enough to show mid thigh to head from a standing position, and keep them out of the bar drop zone entirely, because a bumper plate that bounces sideways into a wall mirror is a floor covered in glass.

Plate storage belongs on the wall, near the rack, split by weight. Two pegs of 45s within a step of the sleeve ends and the change plates lower down and to one side. Wall storage keeps iron off flooring you paid to protect and it returns the square footage you actually lift in. It is also a wall-anchored load, so the pegs are only as good as what they are lagged into: find real framing and use the specified fasteners, the same way you would for a rack.

Lighting at roughly 50 to 75 lumens per square foot is the target, which for a 400 square foot garage means five or six four foot LED shop fixtures. Run them perpendicular to the bar path, not directly over the overhead pressing lane where a bar can reach them, and never put a bare bright fixture where you will stare into it from the bench.

Outlets get planned before the equipment lands. You will want power at the storage wall for a phone and speaker, at the cardio corner, near the fan mount, and a dedicated circuit for a heater if you are running one, which is a dedicated circuit rather than something you share. What you do not want is an extension cord crossing the lifting zone.

Fans mount on the wall, high, aimed across the lifting area rather than at the rack. A floor fan is something to trip over and something a dropped plate can find. Door swings come last and cause the most avoidable problems: an inward swinging door that opens into the rack walk-around, or worse, a door blocked by a bench, turns the only exit from the room into an obstacle.

Layout is a safety decision, not only a convenience one. Keep the bailout path in front of the rack clear at all times, keep glass and windows out of the drop zone, never place a bench where a failed rep could put you into a post, a beam or a stair stringer, and keep the exit unobstructed. What is different about a garage?

Two things eat the space you assumed you had. The first is the car, if it is staying. In a two car bay you can usually keep one parking bay clear and build the gym against the back wall or one side wall, provided the equipment either folds or lives on the wall. In a single bay, a barbell needs nine feet of clear width and a car needs most of the rest, so it is a genuine either-or rather than a clever packing problem.

The second is the door hardware. The garage door tracks run up both side walls and then horizontally back along the ceiling, the opener rail runs down the middle of the bay, and the raised door itself sits flat overhead across the front half of the space. Together they take exactly the centre of the bay, which is usually where you wanted the rack, and they take several inches of headroom with them. This is why so many garage builds end up against a side wall or use a folding wall rack, and why you should measure clearance to the raised door and the opener rail rather than to the ceiling. What is different about a basement?

Three obstacles, all fixed. A steel or timber beam usually runs the length of the house down the middle, supported by posts at intervals of roughly eight to ten feet, and the stairs claim a corner plus the headroom under them.

Lay out from those rather than around them. Put the lifting zone in the largest clear bay between posts and run the bar parallel to the beam, which keeps the long dimension of the barbell in the long dimension of the clear space. Use the awkward volume near a post for plate storage or a dumbbell corner where a fixed obstacle does not matter. Keep the bench and the rack far enough from any post that a bailed bar cannot reach it. Under the stairs is excellent storage and a poor place to lift, because the headroom slopes.

Then check the two basement constraints that layout cannot solve on its own: clearance to the lowest duct or light rather than to the joists, and floor loading if any part of the gym sits on a suspended floor rather than a slab on grade. What if the room is genuinely too small?

If you cannot find nine clear feet, the honest answer is that a barbell is not the right centre of the gym. That is not the end of the build. Can I fit a home gym and still park a car in the garage?

More important than the total is placement: keep fixtures out of the overhead barbell path and off the wall directly behind a mirror, and use a diffused fixture so you are not staring into a bare strip while benching.
