Per side loading is the target total minus the bar weight, divided by two. On a 45 lb bar, a 225 lb total means 90 lb per side, which is two 45 lb plates on each sleeve. An Olympic sleeve has about 16 inches of usable loadable length, so five economy bumper plates per side at 2.9 inches each is close to the physical limit.
Plate loading is the per side arrangement of plates that brings a loaded barbell to a target total, counting the bar itself as part of that total. The arithmetic is simple and people still get it wrong under fatigue, usually by forgetting the bar or by loading one sleeve out of sequence. This calculator does the arithmetic, tells you the closest total your plates can actually make, and checks that the stack physically fits on the sleeve.

How do you work out per side loading?
Take the target total, subtract the bar, divide by two. That is the whole formula:
per side = (target total minus bar weight) divided by 2
A 315 lb squat on a 45 lb bar is 270 lb of plates, so 135 lb per side, which is three 45 lb plates on each sleeve. The convention everywhere is to load heaviest plate first, against the shoulder of the sleeve, then work down in size toward the collar. That is not superstition. Big plates against the shoulder keep the load close to the bearing surface, they stop small plates from being crushed and deformed, and a stack that runs largest to smallest is one you can count at a glance from three steps away.
Load alternating sides as you go rather than finishing one end first. A bar with three 45s on one sleeve and nothing on the other will tip out of the J-hooks or off a jack, and that is a broken foot rather than an inconvenience.
How much weight actually fits on the sleeve?
An Olympic sleeve is 50 mm in diameter with roughly 16 inches of usable loadable length once you leave room for a collar. That is a hard physical ceiling and it is the reason plate thickness matters as much as plate weight in a home gym.
Economy rubber bumper plates are about 2.9 inches thick at 45 lb. Five per side is 14.5 inches, which fills the sleeve, and that caps you at 495 lb on a 45 lb bar. Cast iron 45 lb plates are about 1.4 inches, so the same 16 inches takes ten of them and you would run out of bar rating long before you ran out of sleeve. Competition style bumpers sit between the two at roughly 2.2 inches because the rubber is denser.
This is a purchasing decision, not just a trivia point. A CAP 260 lb economy bumper set at $259.99 gives you pairs of 10, 15, 25, 35 and 45 with a steel insert hub, and if you load all of it on one bar you are using roughly 10 inches per side. Add a second pair of 45s and you are past 13 inches with a collar still to fit. The REP 260 lb bumper set at $582.99 buys a denser, thinner, lower bounce compound, which is worth the difference specifically when you are running out of sleeve or when a bouncing bar in a small room is a hazard rather than an annoyance.
If the budget is the constraint and the floor is concrete, a 110 lb cast iron set at $159.99 is the cheapest way to buy load and iron never wears out. It is loud, it will crater a wood subfloor, and it is unpleasant to drop, but it is thin, so a 300 lb bar still fits inside a short sleeve. Which plate pairs should you buy first?
Buy in this order and you will never be stuck for a jump. A pair of 45s, a pair of 25s, a pair of 10s, a pair of 5s and a pair of 2.5s covers every 5 lb increment from 55 lb to 220 lb on a 45 lb bar. Adding a second pair of 45s takes you to 310 lb. A third pair takes you to 400 lb. The 35 lb pair is genuinely optional and mostly earns its keep in mixed loads and on shorter sleeves.
Fractional plates are the most under bought item in a home gym. A pair of 1.25 lb or 1 lb plates turns a stalled bench press into one that still adds weight every week, because a 2 lb jump on a 150 lb press is a 1.3 percent increase and a 5 lb jump is 3.3 percent. Small plates cost very little and they solve a problem that no amount of programming will.
Weigh what you have if the numbers ever look strange. Cast iron plates are commonly 2 to 3 percent out of tolerance in either direction, and a set of "45s" that are really 43.5 lb will quietly make every log entry wrong. Why do kilogram and pound plates cause problems together?
Both use the same 50 mm collar opening, so they will physically share a bar. The problem is arithmetic and it becomes a safety problem fast. A bar with 20 kg on the left and 45 lb on the right is off by nearly one pound per side, which you will feel on a heavy squat and may not identify in time. Mixed totals also produce numbers like 187.4 lb that you cannot reproduce next week or compare to anyone else's log.
Pick a unit and stay in it for a training block. If you already own both, keep them on separate bars and label the storage. Kilogram plates and a 20 kg bar are the better system if you follow percentage based programming, because 2.5 kg jumps land more evenly than 5 lb jumps do on a percentage table. Pound plates are easier to buy and cheaper to replace in the United States.

Almost everyone calls it a 45 and the 0.91 lb difference does not matter for training, but it matters if you are chasing a specific total for a meet or comparing two logs. Some bars are made to 45 lb exactly and others to 20 kg exactly, so check the manufacturer specification rather than the nickname.
What are the smallest plates worth owning?
A pair of 2.5 lb plates gives you a 5 lb jump on the bar, which is the standard progression step for upper body work. Below that you want fractional plates in 1.25, 1 or 0.5 lb pairs, which let a bench press move up 1 to 2 lb at a time. Those small jumps are what keep a press progressing long after 5 lb increases have stopped working.
Can I mix kilogram and pound plates on the same bar?
Physically yes, since both use a 50 mm collar opening. Practically it is a bookkeeping problem that causes mistakes. Mixed loading gives totals like 187.4 lb that are impossible to reproduce or compare, and an uneven mix left to right is genuinely dangerous. Pick one unit for a whole training block, and if you inherit plates in the other unit, keep them for a separate bar.
Why does my calculator answer not match the target exactly?
Because the plates you own cannot make every number. With 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb pairs, a 45 lb bar can hit any total that is a multiple of 5 lb from 50 upward, but nothing in between. If your target is 187 lb the closest reachable loads are 185 and 190. The tool shows the closest achievable total and the error so you can decide which side of the target to take.
