Two numbers describe a weight plate: what it weighs and how much room it takes up on the sleeve. The first is printed on the face. The second is the one that decides whether 405 lb physically fits on your bar, and it is almost never on the box. A 45 lb cast iron plate is about 1.6 in thick and a 45 lb economy bumper is about 3 in thick, which is the entire reason a bumper set runs out of sleeve at a weight an iron set clears easily. What do weight plates weigh, in kilograms and pounds?
Plates are sold in two systems that do not convert cleanly, and mixing them is how home gym training logs drift. A kilogram set runs 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1 and 0.5 kg. A pound set runs 45, 35, 25, 15, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb. The closest thing to a crossover pair is the 20 kg plate at 44.09 lb and the 45 lb plate at 20.41 kg, which are just under a pound apart and will quietly make a symmetrically loaded bar asymmetric if you mix them side to side.
Plates are always bought and used in pairs, so the useful figure is not the plate weight but the pair weight, which is what actually gets added to the bar. A pair of 45s adds 90 lb, a pair of 25s adds 50 lb and a pair of 2.5s adds 5 lb. That last number is the smallest increment most home sets allow, and it is a large jump on an overhead press. How big is a weight plate, and why are bumpers all the same size?
A bumper plate is 450 mm across, which is 17.7 inches, at every denomination that counts as a full size plate. That is deliberate rather than incidental: because all of them share a diameter, the bar sits at the same height off the floor no matter how it is loaded, roughly 8.9 inches to the center of the bar. A deadlift set up with 135 lb of bumpers starts from exactly the same position as one set up with 405 lb, which is the reason weightlifting standardised on the dimension in the first place.
Cast iron does the opposite. Iron plate diameter scales with weight because the material density is fixed and the plate has to get bigger to get heavier. A 45 lb iron plate is about 17.5 inches across, close enough to a bumper that the bar height barely changes, but a 25 lb iron plate is only about 12 inches and a 10 lb is about 9 inches. Load a bar with iron 25s and the bar starts roughly 3 inches lower than it would with bumpers, which changes the pull enough to notice. How thick is a weight plate, and how much fits on the bar?
Plate thickness is the dimension that decides the practical ceiling of your setup, and it varies more than any other figure here. A men's Olympic bar gives you about 16.3 inches of loadable sleeve per side, and you need to leave roughly an inch of that for a collar, so call it 15.3 usable inches. Divide by plate thickness and you have your real maximum load, which is often far below what the bar is rated to hold.
Cast iron is the thinnest option by a wide margin, which is its one genuine performance advantage. Economy bumpers are the thickest, because a cheap rubber compound has to be made thicker to hit the weight, and five per side is the practical stop. Thickness figures vary between manufacturers by a quarter inch or more even at the same denomination, so treat the table above as a planning range rather than a promise. What does a loaded barbell weigh?
Total bar weight is the bar plus twice the weight on one side, and it is worth memorising the common loads because they come up constantly in programming. On a 44 lb bar, one 45 per side is 135 lb, two is 225, three is 315, four is 405 and five is 495. Those five numbers cover most of what most people will ever load. All of the pound totals above count the bar as 44 lb rather than 45, which is why 135 appears against a 44 lb bar and 45 lb plates: the convention rounds the bar up. What are change plates and fractional plates?
A change plate is a small full-thickness plate below 5 kg or 10 lb, used to make the fine adjustments between the big denominations. A fractional plate is smaller again, sold in pairs of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1 lb or in 0.25 and 0.5 kg, and it exists so you can add less than 5 lb to a bar. These are the cheapest genuinely useful thing you can add to a plate collection and they are almost always bought too late.
The reason is arithmetic. The smallest increment a standard set allows is a pair of 2.5 lb plates, adding 5 lb. On a 315 lb squat that is a 1.6 percent jump and it is invisible. On a 95 lb overhead press it is a 5.3 percent jump, and it is why presses stall while squats keep moving. A pair of 1 lb fractionals turns that same press jump into 2.1 percent, which a body can actually adapt to week over week. Buy them the first time a press stalls twice in a row.

How accurate is the weight printed on a plate?
Weight tolerance is the permitted difference between what a plate is stamped and what it actually weighs, and it is far wider than most people assume outside competition equipment. A calibrated competition plate is held to about 0.1 percent, which on a 25 kg plate is 25 grams. An economy cast iron or crumb rubber plate is commonly built to somewhere between 1 and 3 percent, and some budget sets publish no tolerance at all. On a 45 lb plate, 3 percent is 1.35 lb, and a pair of them at opposite ends of that range puts nearly 3 lb of asymmetry on the bar.
In practice this matters in two situations and is irrelevant everywhere else. It matters if you are training toward a meet where the plates will be calibrated, because your home 315 lb might be a genuine 311 or 319 lb and the difference shows up on the platform. And it matters for balance rather than total: a bar that is a pound heavier on the left than the right is not a safety issue at 135 lb but is noticeable under a heavy squat. The cheap fix is to weigh each plate once on a bathroom scale, write the real number on the rim in paint pen, and pair the plates so each side of the bar gets a matched set. That takes twenty minutes and never needs doing again.
A second and much larger source of error is the bar itself, not the plates. Specialty bars weigh anything from 18 lb for an EZ curl bar to 70 lb for a safety squat bar, and standard 1 inch bars are not standardised at all. How much floor and wall does a plate collection need?
Plates are the heaviest thing in a home gym by total mass and the easiest to underestimate. A 260 lb bumper set plus a bar is over 300 lb concentrated in a footprint smaller than a bath mat, and a 500 lb iron collection stored on the floor is a genuine point load on a suspended wood floor. Getting them off the floor with a wall mounted plate rack frees up the square footage you actually lift in, but it converts a floor load into a wall load, so what the pegs are lagged into matters.
Two other practical notes. First, always run collars even on a light bar, because an unclipped plate sliding off one end while you are under the bar is the failure that actually injures people at home. Which plate set should you actually buy?
The decision is about your floor first and your budget second, and it is not close. On a concrete slab, with controlled lifts and no dropped reps, iron is roughly half the cost per pound and it is thinner, so it wins on both counts. Over a finished room, on a suspended wood floor, or with any lift where the bar leaves your hands, rubber spreads the impact across a 17.7 inch face instead of a 2 inch iron edge and that is the whole argument.
